LAFLA receives its funding from a wide range of public and private sources: government agencies, law firms, corporation and foundations, attorneys, and public-spirited individuals.
The Legal Services Corporation, a nonprofit corporation established by Congress to administer a nationwide legal assistance program, provided about 55% of our operating income in 2006.
IOLTA funds from the State Bar of California's Legal Services Trust Fund Program and the Bar-distributed Equal Access Fund provided another 10% of our operating funds.
The cities of Los Angeles and Santa Monica provided 8% of our operating income, funding general legal services for their low-income residents. The County of Los Angeles provide 5% of our budget for family law services to victims of domestic violence who are participants in the CalWORKs program.
Grants from a variety of sources provided roughly 7% of our annual budget and included support from the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Equal Justice Works and private foundations.
Voluntary contributions from law firms and individual attorneys, corporations, foundations, and the general public also provide substantial operating revenue to augment our funding.
In 2006, LAFLA raised in excess of $1,500,000 from various fundraising efforts.
| Our Annual Fund Drive Law Firm Campaign, targeted at law firms with offices in our service area, brought in over $553,000 from 73 law firms | |
| Our eighth annual Access to Justice Dinner on October 17, 2006 raised $565,725 from the legal, corporate and entertainment sectors to support LAFLA services | |
| The 2006 Long Beach Grand Cru, an international wine competition and gala public tasting, raised $303,655 to support services in the greater Long Beach/Harbor area | |
| Individual contributions and United Way donor-designations raised an additional $165,000 |
This generous support helps make equal access to the law a reality for people who cannot pay for legal services.
