Consumer Law

Our Consumer Law attorneys work on behalf of low-income homeowners who are targeted by unscrupulous lending predators and do not have the means to defend themselves. We remove unlawful liens against property, restore lawful title and confront elder financial abuse. Our attorneys also conduct consumer rights and protection education seminars throughout the community. When appropriate we provide referrals to other legal organizations.

  • Foreclosures and Predatory Lending Practices
  • Home Equity Loan Scams
  • Elderly Financial Abuse, including Reverse Mortgages
  • Forged Deeds and Title Transfers
  • Unlawful Lending Practices
  • Criminal Record Expungement

New* Loan Modification Scams are a growing problem across the country: Homeowners facing foreclosure are losing their money - and their homes - to loan modification scams. Information is your best defense. If you see the signs of a scam and know the facts, you can protect yourself. Learn more at http://www.loanscamalert.org.

New* On October 6, 2009, a new report by the Brennan Center  for Justice, titled Foreclosures: A Crisis in Legal Representation was released. The report documents low-income homeowners’ lack of access to legal representation when facing the complicated world of foreclosures, and the dire consequences produced by this crisis in legal representation.  The report recommends several federal policy actions at this time of great need, including increased funding for the Legal Services Corporation and the repeal of key legal services funding restrictions. To read the report, please visit: http://www.brennancenter.org/content/resource/foreclosures
