“I am now a 2L at Stanford Law School, and I know that my time at LAFLA was not only instrumental in allowing me to get into Stanford, but also in allowing me greater understanding of the material in law school….  One of the main reasons that I decided to intern was to determine whether or not to attend law school. After my time at LAFLA, I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer.

"Thank you again,"

Laura, Stanford Law School Class of 2007

The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles offers internships and externships to law students and those planning to attend law school.

Law Students
All local law schools except UCLA offer part-time and full-time externships. (At USC Law School, public interest externships are called internships.) Each school sets its own requirements for externships, usually requiring between 56 and 60 hours per semester unit.

Students should contact their law school externship or career services program to learn about the school’s requirements—including application deadlines—before contacting the Director of Private Attorney Involvement at LAFLA to schedule an interview.

Pre-Law Students
LAFLA offers a wide range of options for volunteer internships as well as internships for course credit or service learning. The minimum number of hours for an internship is 100 hours during a semester or 4-month period. Though we may use volunteers who are unable to commit that much time, you must commit to 100 hours and fulfill your commitment to receive credit for an internship. LAFLA uses volunteers during traditional business hours.

Internships are open to currently enrolled students as well as graduates seeking legal experience. The application process is highly competitive. You should familiarize yourself with our work and office locations before applying.

Please carefully check the spelling, grammar, and syntax of all correspondence and your resume before submitting them. We value foreign language skills, eagerness to help us in our mission to deliver top quality legal services to the poor in Los Angeles, and flexibility in accepting work assignments. In most cases prior experience is not necessary and we will train you in the relevant law and procedure.

Paralegal Students
LAFLA does not offer paralegal internships at this time. We do not have work available that matches your course of study.
