The Workgroup: The Supporting Families Workgroup (SFWG) helps and represents survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in obtaining restraining orders, and orders for custody, dissolution, visitation, and support. It also assists and represents undocumented survivors of domestic violence, torture, human trafficking, and other serious abuse in removal proceedings and before USCIS; and helps and represents individuals before USCIS to become U.S. Citizens.
LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Attorney.
*NOTE – This position is part of a special program created using designated funds. There is no assurance of ongoing funding or employment beyond September 2022.

• Active membership in the California State Bar;
• Minimum of 6-7 years’ experience preferred;
• Administrative experience in immigration matters before USCIS and EOIR;
• Experience representing clients in removal proceedings;
• Experience representing clients in affirmative asylum hearings preferred;
• Demonstrated knowledge of immigration law;
• Ability to deal with people tactfully and effectively;
• Commitment to working collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts;
• Demonstrated commitment to serving immigrant communities and survivors of torture;
• Provide support to other staff on issues of subject-matter expertise;
• Reliable transportation and willingness to drive to detention centers when permitted;
• Willingness to work beyond a minimum 7.0 hour workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events, and workweeks in excess of 35 hours when caseload or other obligations so necessitate; and
• Bilingual preferred.
• Provide direct legal services to victims of torture;
• Develop appropriate outreach materials and disseminate information about rights and benefits available to victims of torture;
• Identify significant legal needs and issues for survivors of torture in the area of immigration and develop plans, including litigation and policy to address those needs;
• Outreach to immigrant communities where survivors of torture are found;
• Conduct trainings and outreach to community based organizations and community groups;
• In conjunction with the Managing Attorney, and the Pro Bono Director, recruit, train, and supervise volunteer attorneys and law students; and
• Other duties as assigned by the Managing Attorney.
