Torture Survivors Project

Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles’ Torture Survivors Project helps immigrants who are victims of torture that occurred outside the United States. We provide legal assistance and community education to a diverse community of asylum seekers, asylees, and refugees.

Our attorneys help torture survivors apply for asylum or other forms of legal relief from the time they enter the United States until they become U.S. citizens.

Get Help

Our attorneys help torture survivors apply for asylum or other forms of legal relief from the time they enter the United States until they become US citizens.

We can help with:

  • Asylum application (for qualified applicants)
  • Removal defense in court (for qualified applicants)
  • Refugee travel documents
  • Family reunification
  • Adjustment of Status to Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Naturalization

We maintain strong partnerships with various agencies in the greater Los Angeles area, who also refer clients to LAFLA. Among them: Program for Torture Victims, Public Counsel’s Immigrant Rights Project, International Rescue Committee, Esperanza Immigrants Rights Project, Council for American Islamic Relations, Central American Resource Center, Kids in Need of Defense, Human Rights Watch, and Los Angeles LGBT Center.

Our advocates also regularly conduct outreach and Know Your Rights presentations for both community members and local agencies.

Have questions about the public charge rule? See our Know Your Rights post.
