Disaster Response & Recovery

After a disaster, legal aid is a lifeline for survivors beginning to rebuild. LAFLA can help.

LAFLA is supporting an equitable recovery from the Los Angeles wildfires by making critical legal resources accessible to survivors as they navigate the complex healing journey. We provide legal assistance on housing, benefits, family law, and other disaster-related legal issues.

Housing

Renters impacted by disaster may have special protections and resources. We provide legal services and know-your-rights resources on issues including:

  • Price gouging
  • Rent repayments
  • Habitability and damage remediation
  • Harassment

The Los Angeles County Emergency Rent Relief Program is accepting applications until Friday, January 23, 2025 at 4:59 PM. The program is designed to prevent evictions due to unpaid rent related to the LA Wildfires and other emergencies by providing financial assistance directly to small landlords.

FEMA and Insurance Disputes

Many disaster survivors may not have received all the FEMA assistance and insurance reimbursement for which they were eligible.

We can help navigate insurance disputes and appeal decisions by FEMA to increase aid awards.

Family Preparedness

We empower families to overcome common challenges to navigating future crises—including language barriers, contact with law enforcement, and access to healthcare—and pursue available resources with confidence.

Government Benefits

We can help ensure insurance settlements and disaster aid do not impact your eligibility for government benefits, including CalFresh (food stamps), CalWORKS (cash aid), and more.

Advocacy

We support an equitable recovery from the Los Angeles wildfires.

For example, after seeing copious complaints about price gouging in housing, LAFLA and partners took action against six Los Angeles-based landlords to protect wildfire-affected current and future tenants and to ensure that landlords cease this unlawful activity.

This wildfire relief work is made possible in part by a Long-Term Recovery grant from the American Red Cross.
