About the Position:

Stay Housed LA is a coalition of legal services providers and community-based organizations working to provide free eviction defense legal assistance and wraparound services to low-income tenants in L.A. County in an effort to address the eviction and homelessness crises. It is also part of a greater Right to Counsel movement for tenants facing eviction.

LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Spring Law Clerk, Stay Housed LA. The estimated time commitment is 10-16 hours per week with a pay rate of $25 an hour. The position will run for the duration of the Spring 2025 semester for approximately 12 weeks. This position will focus on supporting legal clinics and workshops in collaboration with the StayHousedLA program and other homelessness prevention projects at LAFLA. Training and supervision in eviction/housing law will be provided for the Law Clerk.

* Workgroups available: Eviction Defense Center Workgroup and Santa Monica Workgroup.

NOTE: The Law Clerk position is a part of a special program created using designated educational stipend funds. There is no assurance of ongoing funding or employment beyond the Spring 2025 semester.

Qualifications:

• Current paralegal/law students, paralegals, law grads studying for the bar exam, or law grads awaiting bar results
• Understanding of and commitment to housing and social justice;
• Knowledge of landlord-tenant law preferred;
• Experience in providing assistance to low-income or homeless individuals, including interviewing;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Demonstrated ability to work independently; and
• Ability to work collaboratively with all LAFLA staff, clients, and community organizations.
• Bilingual language ability preferred.

Examples of Duties:

• Participate in remote and/or in-person legal clinics as well as other community outreach and education projects;
• Conduct client intake;
• Interview and provide information to litigants on various legal issues, under attorney supervision;
• Research legal issues related to homelessness prevention, and prepare clinic resources and materials;
• Draft pleadings related to homelessness prevention, such as unlawful detainer answers, under attorney supervision;
• Perform other duties as assigned;
• Contribute to the organization’s DEI plan and goals (via surveys, interviews, etc), supporting all DEI initiatives and helping to promote inclusion in a thoughtful way;

Benefits & Compensation

HYBRID WORK SCHEDULE – Depending on job classifications, some LAFLA staff are working on a manager approved hybrid work schedule, with the ability to work remotely up to half the week, if preferred, after the probationary period. The successful candidate must be local and willing to work from the assigned LAFLA office.
