The Survivor and Family Justice Workgroup assists survivors of domestic violence with restraining orders and family law matters (divorce, paternity, custody and support) in Los Angeles County. Attorneys work with clients through direct representation, court-based domestic violence clinics, community domestic violence clinics, and virtual family law drafting appointments.

 

LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Managing AttorneySurvivor and Family Justice Workgroup.

Qualifications:

  • Active membership in the California State Bar;
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the practice of law, including broad experience in lawyering skills, including client interviewing, legal research, writing, drafting, negotiation, law and motion and discovery techniques, and trial and appellate work;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of family law and community legal needs;
  • Commitment and sensitivity to serving the needs of domestic violence survivors;
  • Willingness to assume responsibility quickly;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail;
  • Previous experience in a legal services program preferred;
  • Comfort communicating in a hybrid office environment, using Teams and Zoom to engage remote colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise the legal work of others engaged in direct services, policy advocacy, transactional work, and/or litigation;
  • Willingness to work beyond a minimum 7.0 hour workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events, and work weeks in excess of 35 hours as needed;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff effectively at all levels of the Foundation;
  • Past experience mentoring attorneys, paralegals and/or law clerks;
  • Ability to work as part of a management team;
  • Commitment to promoting anti-racism;
  • Experience managing and implementing grants and preparing grant reports preferred; and
  • Good people skills and the ability to maintain positive relations with a diverse population.

Examples of Duties:

  • Responsible for the oversight and administration of approximately ten staff members within the
  • Survivor and Family Justice Workgroup;
  • Oversee the operation of our Toll and Long Beach courthouse domestic violence clinics;
  • Lead the Family Law Coalition and represent LAFLA at community partner meetings;
  • Identify and pursue policy-related remedies for victims of domestic violence in the family law arena;
  • Work with the Director of Community and Economic Justice to ensure the Foundation’s mission is being fulfilled and reflected in the workgroup’s annual work plan;
  • Work with the Director of Racial Justice and Equity to address racial justice issues and systemic barriers faced by survivors;
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations of all workgroup staff and implement performance standards for the same; In conjunction with the development and finance departments, ensure grant compliance, compile grant reports, respond to grant audits, and maximize satisfaction of grant deliverables for the
  • CalWORKs grant and other grants funding the Family Law Workgroup;
  • Participate in resource development, including identifying and pursuing grants and other funding opportunities;
  • Ensure regulatory compliance on cases reported to funders;
  • Work with other Managing Attorneys to meet the overall goals of the Foundation;
  • Secure training opportunities for workgroup staff in relevant substantive legal areas; and
  • Conduct case review meetings to ensure that legal services provided are consistent with LAFLA’s priorities, policies, and procedures, and that they maximize office resources to provide the highest quality client service.

HYBRID WORK SCHEDULE – Depending on job classifications, some LAFLA staff are working on a manager approved hybrid work schedule, with the ability to work remotely up to half the week, if preferred, after the probationary period. The successful candidate must be local and willing to work from the assigned LAFLA office.
